Salvivo Limited is new company founded to provide simple, stable, scalable, and sustainable saliva collection solutions that address the growing demand for liquid biopsy and non-invasive testing.

Saliva is rapidly becoming the biological fluid of choice for multiple applications in clinical translational research. It provides an accessible and easy solution for health monitoring and disease detection, and unique opportunities to optimise individual and population health through wellness management and disease prevention.

However, whilst saliva is a powerful diagnostic and monitoring medium, collecting it reliably at scale can be hard due to factors such as variable sample quality (inconsistent volume, pH, contamination), cold chain dependencies for biomarker stability, and high re-sampling rates due to user error.

Salvivo’s mission is to address these factors by transforming how samples are collected, transported and processed. Thereby making analysis more accessible, efficient, and patient-friendly without compromising accuracy.

The company was co-founded by Professor Philip Preshaw and Dr Dale Athey. They first worked together in 2015 when Athey was CEO of pioneering Anglo-Japanese diagnostics company OJ-Bio, and Preshaw was Professor of Periodontology at Newcastle University. The £1.3M project developed and trialled a novel device for detecting the early signs of gum disease and monitoring improvement as the condition is treated. The pair realised that this was an opportunity that had broader implications for oral and systemic health and are now seeking to realise the opportunities through Salvivo.

Prof Preshaw says “Salvivo has already established notable strategic partnerships which mean that our customers have immediate access to the latest innovations in saliva collection and oral health research.”

Dr Athey added “Salvivo is uniquely positioned to deliver the wide range of benefits to industry and to researchers seeking high quality solutions for saliva collection. We have a range of partnerships in place, and further oral health innovations already in the pipeline “.
